Massey Ferguson D151 – Instrument Panel / Dash: Tractor Forward Speed Is Too Fast

The system detects that the tractor's ground speed has exceeded the maximum programmed threshold (often >55 kph). This typically happens if the tractor is operated in free-wheel mode (coasting downhill) or if there is a malfunction with the transmission speed sensor sending erratic, falsely high-speed signals to the controller.

   Verify with the operator if the tractor was recently coasted down a steep grade in free-wheel mode (gravity-induced overspeed cause)

   Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live ground speed data from the transmission speed sensor while driving, looking for erratic spikes (sensor fault cause)

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the transmission speed sensor to the Autotronic transmission controller for shorts to 12V, ground faults, or damaged pins

   Check for accompanying CAN bus communication errors (such as D154) between the Autotronic controller and the Dash

   Connect diagnostic tool

   If the code was caused by coasting: Connect your diagnostic tool to the tractor.

   Clear fault code

   Clear the D151 fault code from the Instrument Panel (Dash) memory.

   Advise operator

   Advise the operator to avoid operating the tractor in free-wheel mode on declines.

   Secure tractor

   If the code is caused by a faulty transmission speed sensor: Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate sensor

   Locate the transmission speed sensor on the side of the transmission housing.

   Disconnect harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

   Remove sensor

   Unthread and remove the faulty speed sensor from the transmission housing.

   Install new sensor

   Install the new OEM transmission speed sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.

    Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

    Clear fault code

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and clear the D151 fault code using a diagnostic tool.

    Test drive

    Test drive the tractor to verify that the speedometer reads accurately and the fault code does not return.
