Massey Ferguson D164 – Instrument Panel (Dash) / DCC3: CAN communications from EEM to DCC3 failed

Issue description

The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus has lost the communication signal between the Electronic Engine Module (EEM / Engine ECU) and the DCC3 (the tractor's instrument panel/dashboard).

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the battery voltage is correct, terminals are securely fastened and uncontaminated, and check the electrical power supply circuits specifically feeding the DCC3 instrument panel and the EEM.

  2. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as AGCO EDT, WinEEM2, or Jaltest) to check for concurrent codes. Often, code D165 will appear alongside D164.

  3. Test the CAN network wires connecting the DCC3 and the EEM. Look for an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, or a short circuit to power on the CAN High and CAN Low lines.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness connectors at both the EEM and the DCC3 instrument panel for corrosion, moisture, backed-out pins, or poor terminal tension.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Access Modules

    Locate the EEM (Engine ECU) on the engine block and the DCC3 Instrument Panel in the cab. Disconnect the main harness connectors at both modules.

  3. Clean and Inspect

    Visually inspect the pins and terminals on both the modules and the harness connectors. Clean any corrosion using electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent or pushed back into the connector housing.

  4. Test the Harness

    Using a digital multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN bus wires between the EEM connector and the DCC3 connector.

  5. Repair Wiring

    If an open or short circuit is found, trace the harness to locate the chafe mark or break. Repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the CAN pigtail.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all harnesses securely. Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and use your diagnostic tool to clear the D164 fault code.

  7. Module Replacement (If Necessary)

    Start the tractor. If the wiring tests perfectly but the code immediately returns and communication cannot be established, the fault likely lies within the internal circuitry of either the DCC3 Instrument Panel or the EEM, requiring replacement or remanufacturing of the faulty module.
