Massey Ferguson D165 – Dash / Instrument Panel (Dashboard Control Center): CAN message lost in the engine network

Communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus where the instrument panel is no longer receiving expected data messages from the Electronic Engine Management (EEM) module (the engine ECU).

   Check junction connectors (X60, X61, X62, X63, X64) for corrosion, backed-out pins, or moisture

   Inspect the main multi-pin connectors at the back of the instrument cluster (Dash Control Center) and at the EEM

   Perform a CAN bus resistance test across the CAN High and CAN Low pins (should read approximately 60 ohms; 120 ohms indicates an open circuit)

   Verify that the EEM is receiving proper voltage and has a solid ground, as power loss will stop it from broadcasting

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during harness manipulation.

   Access the Harness Junctions

   Remove the necessary cowl or dash trim panels to access the rear of the instrument panel and the fuse box area.

   Clean and Reseat Connectors

   Disconnect junctions X60, X62, X63, and X64. Spray the pins with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner. Ensure no pins are bent or pushed back into the plastic housing. Reconnect them firmly.

   Repair Wiring

   If the CAN bus wires (typically a twisted pair) are chafed or broken between the engine bay and the cab firewall, cut out the damaged section and solder in a new twisted pair of wires, sealing the repair with heat-shrink tubing.

   Test the System

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and check if the D165 code changes from 'Active' to 'Stored/Inactive'. Clear the code using a diagnostic tool or the dash menu.

   Module Replacement

   If the wiring tests perfectly and the EEM is confirmed to be broadcasting but the dash still cannot read the messages, the Instrument Panel (Dash Control Center) has an internal CAN transceiver failure and must be replaced.
