D170

Massey Ferguson D170 – EEM (Electronic Engine Management): Communication error on the CAN bus of the EEM system with the instrument panel · Throttle grip

Issue description

When this malfunction occurs, the tractor's electronic system activates an emergency operation (limp mode). During this state, the engine power is limited to 60%, and the maximum engine speed is restricted to 1500 rpm to prevent damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check battery terminals to ensure they are secure, tight, and free from dirt or corrosion, as voltage irregularities can cause CAN bus communication errors.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connections under the armrest, as the throttle control handle routes its signals through this area.

  3. Use the Instrument Panel Control Unit to view the screen and check if any other related EEM or CAN bus fault codes are actively flashing to pinpoint wider wiring issues.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Diagnostics

Use the dealer diagnostic tool or the Instrument Panel Control Unit to verify the D170 code and check for concurrent CAN bus errors.

  2. Inspect the CAN Bus

Trace the CAN bus wiring from the EEM system to the instrument panel and the throttle grip assembly, looking for chafed wires or loose pins.

  3. Test the Throttle Grip

Test the throttle control handle's potentiometer/sensor outputs.

  4. Replace and Clear

If the throttle grip has internally failed and is disrupting the CAN network, replace the handle assembly. Clear the fault codes from the EEM and verify that the tractor exits the 1500 rpm emergency operation mode.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Throttle Grip / Throttle Control Handle

Often integrated into the armrest control console on the 8600 series, an exact OEM part number requires a dealer lookup against the tractor's specific serial number.
