Massey Ferguson D184 – Dash (Instrument Panel / Dashboard): Issue With Signal Voltage From Front Axle Steering Sensor Low Voltage

Issue description

The system has detected that the voltage returning from the front axle steering sensor (designated in wiring diagrams as sensor X235) has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold, typically indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, or a failed sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical linkage connecting the Wheel Angle Sensor (X235) to the front axle to ensure it is not bent, disconnected, or packed with debris.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the X235 sensor back to the main harness, looking for chafed wires, pinched lines, or a short to ground.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out terminals.

  4. Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage from the controller. If reference voltage is present but the signal return is dead or low, the sensor has likely failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Remove the Faulty Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector from the X235 Wheel Angle Sensor on the front axle. Unbolt the sensor housing and detach it from the steering linkage.

  3. Install the New Sensor

    Mount the replacement sensor to the axle and reattach the mechanical linkage. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  4. Reconnect Wiring

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is intact and the locking tab clicks into place.

  5. Perform Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration

    Start the tractor and access the transmission/steering settings menu in the tractor terminal (CCD/Datatronic). Select the Wheel Angle Sensor calibration option. Turn the steering wheel to full lock LEFT and confirm/click the green mark. Turn the steering wheel to full lock RIGHT and confirm/click the green mark. Center the wheels perfectly straight and confirm/click the green mark. (Note: Depending on the exact software version, this may require an authorized AGCO dealer using the Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to complete the calibration).
