Massey Ferguson E1136 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU temperature sensor malfunction

Indicates an ECU temperature sensor malfunction (such as overheating, low/high voltage, or no signal). When this fault occurs, the tractor's emergency operation (limp mode) is activated, limiting engine power to 60% and capping the maximum engine speed at 1500 RPM.

   Check ambient ECU conditions and physical location for debris, blocked ventilation grilles, or abnormal radiant heat from the exhaust (specifically for FMI 16 overheating codes)

   Inspect the main wiring harness connecting to the Engine ECU for damaged pins, corrosion, or short circuits

   Perform a cold engine test by clearing the fault codes; if an E1136 2, 3, or 4 code returns immediately on a cold engine, the internal sensor circuit has failed

   Verify Cooling

   Clean all ventilation grilles and ensure the engine bay cooling system is functioning properly to rule out an actual ECU overheating event.

   Harness Inspection

   Disconnect the battery. Unplug the Engine ECU connectors and inspect for moisture or pushed-back pins. Clean with contact cleaner and reconnect.

   Identify Sensor Location

   The ECU temperature sensor is not an external sensor bolted to the engine block. It is an internal integrated circuit (often an LM71 SPI temperature sensor chip) soldered directly onto the ECU motherboard to monitor the module's internal board temperature.

   Module Replacement/Repair

   Because the sensor is internal, if the wiring harness is intact and the code persists, the standard OEM repair procedure is to replace the entire Engine Control Unit (ECU). Alternatively, the ECU must be sent to a specialized agricultural electronics repair facility for board-level micro-soldering repair.
