Massey Ferguson E157 – Engine Electronic Control Module (ECM/ECU) / EEM: Fuel rail pressure

Issue description

Indicates an issue with the fuel rail pressure. The system continuously monitors the fuel rail pressure, and the exact underlying condition depends on the Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) sub-code attached to E157 (e.g., high pressure, low pressure, sensor fault, or leakage).

Check the cause

  1. Check the fuel level in the tank and inspect fuel lines for physical damage or leaks.

  2. Check the condition of the fuel filters and verify the date of the last technical service; clogged filters restrict flow and cause low rail pressure.

  3. Check the electrical condition of the fuel primer pump and its fuse.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the fuel rail pressure sensor for open circuits, shorts, or corrosion, which typically trigger FMI 3 or FMI 4 electrical faults.

  5. If the code is E157 0 (High Pressure), diagnose the mechanical condition of the Pressure Release Valve (PRV). In normal conditions, the PRV should open at 1600–1650 bar.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

    Connect a diagnostic scan tool (such as WinEEM3s, Jaltest, or AGCO diagnostic software) to read the specific FMI sub-code for E157 to determine if the fault is electrical or mechanical.

  2. Address low pressure faults

    If the fault indicates low pressure (FMI 1 or 14), replace the primary and secondary fuel filters and bleed the fuel system. Test the high-pressure fuel pump output and check the injectors for excessive return flow.

  3. Address sensor circuit errors

    If the fault indicates a sensor circuit error (FMI 2, 3, or 4), use a multimeter to verify the 5V reference, ground, and signal wires at the rail pressure sensor. If the wiring is intact but the sensor voltage is out of range, replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor.

  4. Address high pressure faults

    If the fault indicates high pressure (FMI 0 or 16), inspect the high-pressure pump regulator/metering valve and the fuel rail Pressure Release Valve (PRV). Replace the PRV if it is stuck closed.

  5. Clear error codes

    After replacing the faulty component, clear the error codes from the EEM dashboard/control unit.

  6. Verify repair

    Stop and re-run the engine to verify that the code does not return and that the fuel rail pressure matches the commanded parameters.
