Massey Ferguson E168 – Instrument Panel / Dashboard Control Unit: Battery voltage
Issue description
Battery voltage is very high, very low, no signal, above normal, or below normal depending on the FMI sub-code.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Massey Ferguson 5400 Series
- Massey Ferguson 6400 Series
- Massey Ferguson 7600 Series
- Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
Check the cause
Perform a Static Battery Test: Use a digital multimeter to check the battery voltage with the tractor off. A fully charged 12V battery should read approximately 12.6V.
Conduct a Visual Inspection: Check the primary battery connections, secondary accumulator connections (if equipped), and earth (ground) straps for corrosion, looseness, or damage.
If diagnosing Low Voltage (E 168 1 or 4): Perform a voltage-drop test across the battery cables and earth straps while cranking to identify high electrical resistance.
If diagnosing High Voltage (E 168 0 or 3): Perform a Charging System Test by testing the alternator output and voltage regulator with the engine running to see if it is overcharging the system (spiking above 15.5V - 17.0V).
Repair steps
Clean and Secure Connections
Disconnect the battery terminals. Use a wire brush and contact cleaner to remove all corrosion from the battery posts, terminals, and chassis earth connections. Reconnect and tighten securely.
Address Low Voltage (E 168 1, 4, 18)
If the battery fails a load test or cannot maintain a 12.6V charge, replace the battery. If the battery is good but voltage drops under load, replace the faulty/corroded battery cables or earth straps.
Address High Voltage (E 168 0, 3, 16)
If the alternator is overcharging the system, the voltage regulator (or the entire alternator assembly) must be replaced to prevent damage to the tractor's ECUs.
Clear Codes
Once the physical repair is made, use the dashboard control unit or a dedicated diagnostic tool to clear the error code from the system. Run the tractor to verify the code does not return.
