Massey Ferguson E175 – Engine ECU: Engine Oil Temperature or Sensor Issue
Issue description
Indicates an issue with the Engine Oil Temperature or the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor. FMI 2 indicates NO SIGNAL, FMI 3 indicates HIGH sensor fault, FMI 4 indicates LOW sensor fault, and FMI 16 indicates actual Engine oil temperature HIGH.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
Check the cause
Check engine oil and engine coolant levels to ensure they are within normal operating bands.
Inspect the cooling system, checking the radiator and oil cooler passages for debris blockages.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor for chafed wires, broken wires, or corrosion.
Perform a manual gauge verification by unplugging the sensor and connecting a manual diagnostic gauge to verify actual oil temperature and pressure.
Repair steps
Address Overheating (If E 175 16 is present)
Reduce the PTO load immediately. Clean the radiator and oil cooler fins. Top off engine oil and coolant to their specified levels.
Repair Wiring (If FMI 2, 3, or 4 is present)
If physical damage is found on the sensor harness, repair the wiring fault (solder/heat-shrink broken wires or replace the connector pigtail).
Replace the Sensor
If the wiring is intact and the manual gauge proves the engine is not actually overheating, the sensor has failed internally. Locate the Engine Oil Temperature Sensor on the engine block/oil cooler housing. Disconnect the electrical connector. Unthread the old sensor (have a catch pan ready for minor oil loss). Install the new sensor and tighten to OEM torque specifications. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear Codes
Use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the E175 fault code from the Engine ECU.
Verify Repair
Start the tractor and allow it to reach normal operating temperature to ensure the code does not return.
Parts you might need
(1)Engine Oil Temperature Sensor
Ensure the replacement sensor matches the connector type (e.g., 2-pin vs 3-pin) for your specific engine tier (Tier 3 / Tier 4).
