Massey Ferguson E190 – Engine ECU: Engine speed signal ABOVE NORMAL

The control unit is receiving an engine RPM signal that exceeds the maximum expected threshold, is erratic, or is spiking abnormally. This is typically caused by a failing engine speed sensor, a short circuit in the wiring harness, or electrical interference.

   Visually inspect the engine speed sensor, the two-pin connector, and the pins for corrosion, moisture, or physical damage.

   With the tractor stopped and at ambient temperature, disconnect the sensor and measure the resistance across the pins (should read approximately 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms).

   Check for an alternating voltage (AC) output from the sensor when the engine/gear is turning.

   Test the wiring harness for continuity, proper insulation, and ensure there are no short-circuits to ground (-) or to a +12V power source.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the engine speed sensor (typically mounted on the engine block near the flywheel housing or timing gear, depending on the specific SISU engine model).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the two-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place and carefully pull the old sensor out of its bore.

   Install

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor (if applicable), insert it into the bore, and tighten the retaining bolt to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the two-pin wiring harness, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

7. 7

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the Massey Ferguson diagnostic software (Wintest or EDT) to clear the E190 fault code.

8. 8

   Test

   Start the tractor and verify that the engine RPM reads correctly on the dash and that the fault code does not return.
