E52023E5.31

Massey Ferguson E52023E5.31 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Engine Module Internal Issue (ECU)

Issue description

The tractor's onboard diagnostic (OBD) system has detected an internal hardware or software failure within the engine controller. This can occur during the module's boot-up sequence, due to corrupted firmware, internal circuit board failure, or severe voltage spikes.

Applies to these machines

  • 5608
  • 5609
  • 5610
  • 5611
  • 5612
  • 5613
  • MF 5608
  • MF 5609
  • MF 5610
  • MF 5611
  • MF 5612
  • MF 5613

Check the cause

  1. Test the battery voltage and alternator output to rule out low voltage during cranking or voltage spikes causing the ECU to fail its internal boot-up self-test

  2. Inspect the main wiring harness connectors at the Engine ECU for moisture ingress, corrosion, or bent pins

  3. Verify the integrity of the CAN lines communicating with the ECU

  4. Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) and attempt to clear the code. If it returns, check for a manufacturer software update, as a re-flash may resolve internal software corruption

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts or spikes during removal.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Bosch engine controller, typically mounted directly to the side of the engine block (e.g., AGCO Power 33 AWI engine) or on the firewall.

  3. Remove the ECU

Carefully unlock and disconnect the multi-pin wiring harness connectors from the ECU. Remove the mounting bolts securing the module to its bracket and remove the unit.

  4. Install the New/Repaired ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the bolts. Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  5. Restore Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Programming & Calibration

Connect the AGCO EDT via the diagnostic port. Flash the ECU with the correct firmware for your specific tractor model and engine configuration.

  7. Finalize

Input any necessary injector trim codes, clear all historical DTCs, and start the engine to verify the fault code does not return.
