E898

Massey Ferguson E898 – Tractor ECU / Engine Control Unit: Required speed out of range

Issue description

The tractor's electronic system detects a critical malfunction and activates an emergency operation mode (limp mode). In this state, the engine power is automatically limited to 60%, and the maximum engine speed is capped at 1500 RPM to prevent damage.

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
  • MF 8650
  • MF 8660
  • MF 8670
  • MF 8680
  • MF 8690

Check the cause

  1. Check CAN-bus integrity by inspecting the wiring harness and connectors leading to the ECU for corrosion, moisture, or loose pins

  2. Verify battery voltage and ensure battery terminals are secure and free from dirt, as voltage drops can cause erratic speed sensor readings

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Read live data

Read the live data from the engine and transmission speed sensors to determine which sensor is reporting the out-of-range value.

  3. Inspect wiring harness

Inspect the wiring harness for the specific sensor identified by the EDT.

  4. Replace sensor or repair wiring

Replace the faulty speed sensor or repair the CAN-bus wiring short.

  5. Clear fault code

Clear the E898 code using the AGCO EDT to restore full engine power and RPM limits.
