E9008

Massey Ferguson E9008 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Defective CAN ID module / CAN ID module off (ECU to ID)

Issue description

Communication failure or loss of signal between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the CAN Identification module over the tractor's Controller Area Network (CAN bus).

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
  • 8650
  • 8660
  • 8670
  • 8680
  • 8690
  • Massey Ferguson 7400 Series
  • 7490 Dyna VT

Check the cause

  1. Check for a voltage drop during cranking, especially if the error triggers sporadically after a cold start and disappears when restarted warm

  2. Inspect battery terminals to ensure they are secure, tight, and free from dirt or corrosion

  3. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECU and the CAN ID module for chafed wires, loose pins, or moisture in the connectors

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Clean Connections

Disconnect the wiring harness at the ECU and the CAN ID module. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent or pushed back.

  3. Test the Harness

Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the CAN_H and CAN_L lines between the ECU and the CAN ID module. Verify there are no short circuits to ground or power.

  4. Re-test

Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. If the code was caused by a cold-start voltage drop or a dirty connector, the code should clear.

  5. Replace Module

If the wiring is intact, voltage is correct, and the code persists (or the tractor enters a limp-home mode limiting engine power to 60% and 1500 RPM), the CAN ID module itself has failed internally and must be replaced.

  6. Dealer Calibration

Contact your dealer. Installing a new CAN ID module or ECU component may require dealer-level software (AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool) to pair the new module's ID with the tractor's network.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • CAN ID Module (CAN Identification Module) / Sisu Diesel EEM3 Control Component

When replacing electronic control components on these engines, the manual strictly specifies using genuine AGCO / Sisu Diesel parts, as the model specification indicated on the control unit type plate must be provided when ordering to ensure correct emissions and CAN bus compatibility.
