Massey Ferguson E9021 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Failure of 5V DC power supply

Indicates a failure of the 5V DC power supply (5V reference circuit #1). E 9021 4 is a LOW fault (short to ground or open circuit) and E 9021 3 is a HIGH fault (short to voltage). This circuit powers engine and chassis sensors. When this fault occurs, the system activates an emergency operation mode (limp mode) where engine power is limited to 60% and the maximum speed is restricted to 1500 rpm.

   Battery & Grounds: Make sure the battery terminals are secure and free from dirt, and check all main battery and chassis ground connections.

   Sensor Isolation: Disconnect sensors on this 5V circuit one at a time (e.g., pressure sensors, position sensors) while monitoring the circuit voltage with a multimeter. If the 5V reference returns when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.

   Wiring Harness Check: Use a multimeter to check the 5V supply lines from the ECU to the sensors for continuity, shorts to ground, or shorts to 12V power.

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Ensure the machine is powered down before beginning electrical repairs.

   If a specific sensor was identified as shorting the 5V circuit during the diagnostic checks, remove and replace the faulty sensor.

   Replace the internally shorted sensor to restore the 5V reference circuit.

   If the wiring harness is damaged, chafed, or melted (causing a short to ground or voltage), repair the affected section of the harness using OEM-approved wiring repair techniques, or replace the harness section.

   Address any physical damage to the wiring harness that is causing the short.

   If all sensors and wiring test good, the internal 5V power supply within the Engine ECU has failed. The ECU will need to be removed and sent out for repair, cloning, or replacement.

   The ECU must be repaired or replaced if it cannot generate the 5V reference internally.

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and verify via the Instrument Panel Control Unit that the E9021 code has cleared.

   Confirm the repair was successful and the fault code is no longer active.
