Massey Ferguson E9030 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit in the main relay 1 ECU
Issue description
The engine's control system has detected an improper voltage or feedback signal on the circuit that controls Main Relay 1. When this code is active, the tractor may enter a 'limp home' emergency operation mode, which limits engine power to 60% and caps the maximum engine speed at 1500 RPM.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- Massey Ferguson 8600 Series Tractors (MF 8650, MF 8660, MF 8670, MF 8680, MF 8690)
- Tractors equipped with SisuDiesel Tier 3 / SISU EEM3 / AGCO Power engines
Check the cause
Check battery terminals to ensure they are secure, properly tightened, and free from dirt or corrosion, as voltage irregularities can trigger false relay codes.
Locate Main Relay 1 in the main fuse/relay distribution box and inspect the socket pins for signs of melting, corrosion, or pushed-out terminals.
Bench test the internal coil of Main Relay 1 for an internal short or open circuit by applying 12V to the control pins and verifying continuity across the load pins.
Perform a harness continuity test between the ECU and the relay socket to check for a short to ground (chafed wire touching chassis) or a short to battery positive (wires melted together).
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Relay Panel
Open the main electrical distribution box and locate Main Relay 1 (refer to the fuse/relay diagram on the panel cover).
Replace the Relay
If the relay failed the bench test or shows signs of heat damage, replace it with a new OEM 12V relay.
Repair Wiring
If the multimeter test revealed a short circuit in the harness, trace the wire from the relay box to the ECU. Look for pinch points or areas where the wire loom rubs against the engine block or chassis. Splice and heat-shrink any damaged wires.
Reassemble and Reconnect
Seat the new relay firmly into the socket. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Clear Codes
Connect the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool) or use the Instrument Panel Control Unit to clear the stored E9030 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the tractor. Verify that the warning lamp is off, the code does not return, and the engine can rev past the 1500 RPM limp-mode limit.
