Massey Ferguson E9031 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit in the main relay 2 ECU

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the second main power relay for the engine management system has shorted out. This fault prevents the ECU from properly managing its power supply or executing its automated shutdown/startup sequences.

Check the cause

  1. Identify the FMI Sub-code: Determine if the short is to ground (FMI 6) or to power (FMI 3) to narrow down the wiring search.

  2. Inspect the Relay: Locate the main relay/fuse board (usually under the right-hand console or cab access panel). Remove 'Main Relay 2' and test it with a multimeter for internal shorts across the coil pins.

  3. Inspect the Socket: Check the relay socket on the board for melted plastic, burnt terminals, or corrosion that could cause bridging/shorting.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: Disconnect the engine ECU harness and the relay board. Use a multimeter to check the control wire for Main Relay 2 for continuity to ground (chassis) or to a 12V power source. Look for chafed wire insulation or pinched harnesses along the routing from the cab to the engine bay.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent further electrical damage or accidental spikes during repair.

  2. Access the Relay Board

    Remove the interior trim panels necessary to access the main electrical fuse and relay center.

  3. Replace the Relay

    If the relay failed the multimeter test (internal short), discard it and install a new OEM 12V relay.

  4. Repair the Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the harness was found to be shorting to the chassis or another wire, open the wire loom at the site of the damage. Cut out the melted/chafed section of the wire, solder in a new section of equivalent gauge, and seal it with heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Reassemble and Test

    Plug the ECU and relay board back in. Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and verify that the ECU powers up.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool to clear the E9031 code and cycle the key to ensure the ECU shutdown/startup function operates normally without throwing the code again.
