E9033

Massey Ferguson E9033 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Defective ECU shutdown function

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) failed to power down correctly after the ignition was turned off. This is typically caused by the ECU's main power relay sticking closed, a short circuit in the relay wiring keeping the circuit energized, or an internal software/hardware failure within the ECU preventing the shutdown sequence.

Applies to these machines

  • 8600 Series
  • MF 8650
  • MF 8660
  • MF 8670
  • MF 8680
  • MF 8690

Check the cause

  1. Inspect battery terminals to ensure they are secure and free from dirt or corrosion, as voltage irregularities can cause relay malfunctions.

  2. Locate and test the ECU Main Relay in the primary fuse/relay panel to see if the internal contacts are physically stuck closed when the ignition is off.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the ignition switch, the main relay, and the ECU for a short circuit to BAT+ (battery positive) or a short circuit to EARTH (ground).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to force a hard reset of the ECU and ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Inspect and Swap Relay

Locate the ECU Main Relay. Remove it and test it with a multimeter. If you suspect it is sticking, swap it with a known-good relay of the exact same amperage and pinout from a non-critical circuit (like a work light relay).

  3. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the battery and cycle the tractor's ignition on and off. Wait to see if the ECU powers down correctly or if code E9033 returns.

  4. Dealer Intervention

If the relay is functioning perfectly and the wiring harness shows no shorts, the fault lies within the Engine ECU itself. The ECU will require a software re-flash, an update, or a full replacement by an authorized Massey Ferguson dealer using the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT).

Parts you might need

(1)
  • ECU Main Relay / Engine Control Unit Relay

Specific OEM part numbers for the 8600 series main relay are not published. Pull the existing relay and read the manufacturer part number (often Bosch or Hella) stamped directly on the relay housing to source a direct replacement.
