E9034

Massey Ferguson E9034 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Main relay ECU cut-off did not work last time

Issue description

When the ignition key was turned off during the previous operating cycle, the control module failed to power down correctly. This condition is typically caused by the ECU main relay sticking closed (remaining energized), a short to battery voltage in the relay control circuit, or the ECU failing to complete its internal shutdown sequence.

Applies to these machines

  • Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
  • MF 8650
  • MF 8660
  • MF 8670
  • MF 8680
  • MF 8690
  • MF 7600 Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related fault codes: Look for codes E9030, E9031, or E9032, which indicate a short circuit to ground or battery voltage (BAT+) on ECU main relays 1, 2, or 3.

  2. Locate the ECU Main Relay in the tractor's main fuse/relay panel.

  3. Test the relay for sticking contacts: Remove the relay and use a multimeter to check for continuity across the load pins. If there is continuity when the relay coil is unpowered, the internal contacts are welded shut.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the ignition switch, the main relay socket, and the ECU for chafing or shorts to battery voltage.

  5. Verify battery voltage and ensure the battery terminals are clean and tight. Low voltage can cause relays to stick or the ECU to hang during its shutdown sequence.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety and reset the system.

  2. Access the main fuse and relay panel.

Refer to the operator's manual for the specific location on your cab configuration.

  3. Identify the ECU Main Relay using the fuse box diagram.

  4. Remove the relay and inspect the socket terminals for corrosion, melting, or pushed-out pins.

Clean the terminals with electrical contact cleaner if necessary.

  5. If the relay failed the diagnostic continuity test (sticking closed), replace it with a new OEM relay.

  6. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Turn the ignition key to the ON position, then turn it OFF.

Wait for the ECU to complete its shutdown sequence (you should hear the main relay click off after a few seconds).

  8. Connect a diagnostic tool, clear the E9034 fault code, and start the tractor.

Shut it down again to verify the code does not return on the next startup.
