E9070

Massey Ferguson E9070 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Electronic Engine Management (EEM) / TPU: Crankshaft speed sensor / Engine speed signal

Issue description

The engine control module is not receiving a valid or expected rotational speed signal from the crankshaft position/speed sensor, which is critical for managing fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and emissions systems.

Applies to these machines

  • 8600 series
  • 5400 series
  • 6400 series
  • 7400 series
  • 7600 series

Check the cause

  1. Perform diagnostic tests on the speed sensors using Wintest software before replacing any parts (per Service Bulletin TRAC 43/08)

  2. Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for moisture, corrosion, backed-out pins, or fatigue

  3. Verify that the sensor's air gap (the distance between the sensor tip and the crankshaft position ring) is correct and free of debris

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

The crankshaft speed sensor is typically mounted near the flywheel housing where it can read the crankshaft position ring. Note: On some models (like the 6499), accessing engine/transmission speed sensors may require removing a tire or other obstructing components for clearance.

  2. Disconnect

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

  3. Remove

Extract the one or two mounting bolts securing the sensor to the housing, then pull the sensor out.

  4. Clean

Thoroughly clean the mounting area on the housing to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

  5. Install

Insert the new OEM sensor. Check and set the correct air gap if adjustable on your specific engine model.

  6. Secure

Tighten the mounting bolts and reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  7. Clear Codes

Use the diagnostic tool to clear the E9070 fault code and run the tractor to verify the engine RPM registers correctly on the dash.
