Massey Ferguson E9072 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EEM3 / EEM4: Crankshaft speed sensor, reverse connected
Issue description
The control module is receiving an inverted or reversed signal from the crankshaft speed sensor. This underlying condition is almost always an electrical polarity issue—typically caused by the sensor's two wires (signal and ground/reference) being pinned backward in the connector, a botched wiring harness repair, or an internal short/failure in the sensor causing the waveform to read in reverse.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector for recent repairs, splices, or replacements that may have reversed polarity
Verify the connector pinout to ensure pins have not been swapped and the connector isn't forced on backward
Inspect for chafed wires or shorts to ground/power that could distort the sensor's signal polarity
Test the sensor output waveform with a multimeter or oscilloscope to verify if polarity is genuinely inverted or if the sensor is dead
Inspect the main connector at the EEM3 control unit for bent pins, moisture, or corrosion
Repair steps
Safety Prep
Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery. (Note: OEM manuals strongly recommend disconnecting the main connector of the EEM3 control unit before doing any major electrical work or welding to prevent module damage).
Locate the Sensor
Locate the crankshaft speed sensor on the engine block (typically reading off the crankshaft pulley or flywheel).
Correct Wiring (If Applicable)
If diagnostics reveal the wires were spliced backward during a previous repair, de-pin the connector, swap the signal and reference wires to their correct orientation, and re-pin the connector.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
If the wiring is correct but the sensor is internally faulty, unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the engine block and pull the sensor out.
Install the New Sensor
Clean the mounting port. Insert the new OEM crankshaft speed sensor. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque in your service manual. Reconnect the wiring harness.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery and EEM3 module. Turn the ignition on and use a compatible diagnostic scan tool to clear the E9072 fault code. Start the engine to ensure the code does not return and that engine RPM reads accurately.
