Massey Ferguson E9131 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Malfunction of the fuel injector No. 1
Issue description
The engine control system has detected an anomaly with the fuel injector on cylinder #1, typically an electrical issue such as an open circuit, a short circuit to earth, a short circuit between cables, or a current level error. The tractor may enter an emergency limp home mode, limiting engine power to 60% and maximum speed to 1500 RPM.

Check the cause
Check the fuel level in the tank and inspect all fuel lines for damage, kinks, or leaks
Check for water in the fuel system sump/water separator and drain if necessary
Check the condition of the fuel filter and the suction hoses
Ensure the battery terminals are secure and free from dirt, as voltage irregularities can trigger false injector codes
Inspect the wiring harness and the specific electrical connector going to fuel injector No. 1 for chafing, corrosion, or a disconnected plug
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure the engine is cool.
Access
Remove the engine side panels/covers to gain access to the fuel rail and the cylinder head.
Disconnection
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from fuel injector No. 1.
Line Removal
Loosen and remove the high-pressure fuel line connecting the common fuel rail to injector No. 1. Cap the rail fitting to prevent contamination.
Extraction
Remove the injector hold-down clamp or retaining bolt. Carefully pull the faulty injector out of the cylinder head bore.
Cleaning
Thoroughly clean the injector bore in the cylinder head, ensuring no carbon buildup or debris falls into the cylinder.
Installation
Install the new fuel injector. Always use a new copper sealing washer at the base of the injector and new O-rings.
Reassembly
Reinstall the hold-down clamp and torque the bolt to the exact OEM specification. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line and torque to spec.
Reconnection
Plug the electrical connector back into the injector.
Finalization
Reconnect the battery. Prime/bleed the fuel system if required by the specific engine manual, start the tractor, check for leaks, and clear the E9131 fault code from the instrument panel.
