Massey Ferguson E9170 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Lift pump control / Fuel priming pump control
Issue description
An electrical circuit malfunction in the system that controls the electric fuel lift pump. FMI 5 indicates an open circuit (broken wire, disconnected plug, or burnt-out motor), while FMI 6 indicates a short circuit to earth (grounded wire or internal short).
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Massey Ferguson 8600 Series
- MF 8690
- Massey Ferguson 6400 Series
- Massey Ferguson 7400 Series
- Massey Ferguson 8400 Series
Check the cause
Verify the FMI Code using the EDT or dashboard display to determine if the code is FMI 5 (Open) or FMI 6 (Short)
Check fuses and relays for a blown lift pump fuse or faulty relay (a blown fuse usually accompanies an FMI 6 short to earth)
Inspect the wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the electric fuel lift pump for chafing, melted insulation, or breaks
Disconnect the electrical plug at the lift pump and inspect pins for corrosion, moisture, or loose terminals
Test the pump motor resistance using a digital multimeter (infinite reading indicates an internal open circuit/FMI 5, zero or near-zero indicates an internal short/FMI 6)
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a damaged harness, splice and heat-shrink the broken wires, or replace the damaged harness section. If a short circuit caused a fuse to blow, replace the fuse only after repairing the short.
Replace the Lift Pump
If the wiring is intact but the pump failed the resistance test, the electric lift pump must be replaced. Relieve any residual fuel pressure, disconnect the fuel inlet and outlet lines, unbolt the pump bracket, install the new pump, and reconnect the fuel lines securely.
Reconnect and Prime
Reconnect the electrical connector to the pump and reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the 'ON' position (without starting the engine) to allow the ECU to activate the new pump and prime the fuel system. Check for fuel leaks.
Clear Codes
Connect the EDT diagnostic tool to clear the E9170 fault code from the ECU's memory. Start the engine to verify the repair.
