Massey Ferguson E9231 – Diagnostic ID module: Engine Serial Number Mismatch

This fault code indicates that the engine serial number stored in the tractor's Diagnostic ID module does not match the serial number expected by the Engine Control Unit (ECU), or the engine specification data is conflicting.

   Determine if the Engine ECU or the Diagnostic ID module was recently replaced, updated, or swapped from another tractor.

   Locate the physical engine data plate on the Sisu engine block and note the exact factory engine serial number.

   Look for accompanying Diagnostic ID module faults that might indicate a hardware failure rather than just a mismatch (e.g., E9233, E9234, E9235).

   Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to read the serial numbers currently broadcasted by the ECU and the ID module to see which one is missing or incorrect.

   Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

   Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off).

   Access the Engine Control (EEM3) module and navigate to the Diagnostic ID module parameters.

   If the modules are functioning but simply mismatched, use the service tool to input and synchronize the correct engine serial number from the physical engine data plate into the module.

   This typically occurs after an ECU replacement.

   If the ID module has failed, physically replace the Diagnostic ID module.

   Often indicated by an active E9235 memory fault alongside E9231.

   Once the new module is installed, use the AGCO EDT to flash the module and program the correct engine serial number and engine specifications.
