Massey Ferguson E9240 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Sisu EEM: Diagnostic ID module: Engine serial number missing

The Engine Identification Module (IDM) stores critical engine data. When the main engine computer cannot read the serial number from this module, it triggers code E9240, and the engine control system will typically limit the engine's power and speed (engine derate).

   Verify that the ID module (X188) is physically present and securely attached to the engine block near the ECU.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ID module to the ECU for broken wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

   Scan for other ID module-related fault codes (such as E9235, E9236, E9237, or E9238) that might indicate a broader electrical issue rather than just missing data.

   Order the Correct Part

   A new ID module must be ordered through an AGCO/Sisu dealer using the exact engine serial number so that it comes pre-programmed with the correct engine specifications. You cannot use a generic or blank ID module.

   Preparation

   Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Removal

   Locate the faulty Engine Identification Module (X188) on the engine block. Disconnect its wiring harness and unbolt it from the block.

   Installation

   Securely attach the new, pre-programmed ID module to the engine block and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Temporary Bypass (If part is delayed)

   If a replacement ID module is not immediately available, a technician with an AGCO service tool can perform a 'Manual IDM bypass'. This tells the ECU to temporarily ignore the missing ID module and restores full engine power (often limited to a specific timeframe, such as 400 hours).

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the E9240 code and verify the ECU is now reading the engine serial number.
