Massey Ferguson E97 – Engine ECU: Water in fuel

Occurs when the Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor, which is installed inside or at the bottom of the fuel filter/water separator, detects that the accumulated water has exceeded a specific threshold. This risks water being supplied to the high-pressure fuel pump, which can cause severe engine damage and poor combustion.

   Perform a visual fuel inspection by draining fluid from the separator into a clear glass to check for water separation

   Observe the tractor's exhaust for white smoke, which indicates water passing through the combustion chamber

   If no water is present in the fuel, inspect the WIF sensor connector and wiring harness for corrosion, damage, or a short circuit causing a false signal

   Drain the Water

   Turn off the engine. Locate the fuel filter/water separator. Place a drain pan underneath and unscrew the drain valve (petcock) at the bottom. Allow the fluid to drain until clear diesel fuel begins to flow out, then securely close the valve.

   Clear the Code

   Turn the key on and check if the E97 code clears. If it does, top off the fuel tank with clean, high-quality diesel to prevent condensation.

   Replace the Sensor (If Faulty)

   If draining the water does not resolve the code, the sensor itself has likely failed. Disconnect the electrical harness from the WIF sensor at the bottom of the filter, unscrew the old sensor from the filter housing, install the new sensor ensuring the O-ring is properly seated to prevent air leaks, and reconnect the electrical harness.

   Bleed the Fuel System

   Any time the fuel system is opened, air can enter. Bleed the fuel lines according to your specific model's procedure to prevent hard starting or stalling.
