Massey Ferguson FA117 – Suspension Module (SUSPENSION) / Autotronic 5: Issue With Front Axle Calibration Stored In Suspension Module (SUSPENSION)

The stored calibration values for the suspended front axle's travel limits are missing, corrupted, or out of the acceptable range. The system relies on these values to know the exact angle and position of the front axle to adjust the suspension damping and maintain consistent implement position/draft control.

   Check for companion codes (FA133, FA134, FA135, FA136, FA221, FA222, FA224, or FA225) that specifically point to the X166 sensor having a signal that is too high, too low, or failing calibration.

   Inspect the physical linkage connecting the front axle to the X166 position sensor to ensure it is not bent, disconnected, or mechanically binding.

   Disconnect the X166 sensor and inspect the pins and connector for moisture intrusion, corrosion, water ingress, or hydraulic fluid contamination.

   Attempt to run the front axle calibration procedure before replacing parts, as the module may have simply lost its memory.

   Secure the Tractor

   Park the tractor on a flat, level surface. Lower any implements and ensure the tractor is safely supported if you need to work near the axle travel path.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the X166 front axle position sensor to prevent dirt from entering the electrical connections.

   Replace the Sensor (if faulty)

   Disconnect the wiring harness from the X166 sensor. Unbolt the sensor housing from its mounting bracket and detach the mechanical linkage arm. Install the new sensor, ensuring the housing is properly sealed and the linkage is reattached at the correct orientation. Apply dielectric grease to the electrical connector to prevent future moisture intrusion and plug it in.

   Perform Calibration

   This is a mandatory step. Because the FA117 code specifically flags a calibration issue, installing a new sensor will not clear the code on its own. You must use the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu or the dealer service tool (EDT) to initiate the Front Axle Suspension Calibration. This process will cycle the suspension through its maximum and minimum travel limits to learn the new sensor's voltage range.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Once calibration is successful, clear the FA117 fault code from the Suspension Module and test drive the tractor to ensure erratic hitch movement or suspension stiffness has been resolved.
