Massey Ferguson M04 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module is detecting infinite resistance or a complete lack of electrical continuity in the circuit that powers the solenoid for the loader's mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader valve block for severed wires, pinch points, or chafing against the tractor chassis

  2. Disconnect the electrical plug at the mid-mount electro valve solenoid and inspect the pins for severe corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals

  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two terminals of the solenoid coil itself (an 'OL' or infinite reading indicates a broken internal coil winding)

  4. If the solenoid tests within normal resistance specifications, test the wiring harness for continuity between the solenoid connector and the Mid Mount Valve Module pins to locate the break in the wire

Repair steps

  1. Relieve hydraulic pressure

    Lower the loader to the ground, turn off the tractor, and relieve all hydraulic pressure in the system by moving the loader joystick in all directions.

  2. Locate valve block

    Locate the mid-mount valve block (typically mounted on the right side of the tractor under the cab or on the loader subframe).

  3. Disconnect harness

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty electro valve solenoid.

  4. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic tests pointed to a wiring issue, splice and repair the broken wire using weather-sealed heat shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  5. Remove retaining nut

    If the solenoid coil is dead, remove the retaining nut located at the end of the solenoid cartridge stem.

  6. Remove faulty coil

    Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve stem. (Note: On some valve designs, you may need to unscrew the entire valve cartridge. If doing so, ensure the area is clean to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system).

  7. Install new coil

    Slide the new OEM solenoid coil onto the stem and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  8. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  9. Test operation

    Turn on the tractor, clear the M04 fault code using the dash interface or a compatible diagnostic tool, and test the loader joystick to confirm proper operation.
