Massey Ferguson M12 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Solenoid High Amp Draw

Issue description

The electrical current (amperage) being drawn by the solenoid on the loader's mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve has exceeded the expected or safe threshold. This condition is typically caused by an internal short circuit within the solenoid coil itself, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or severe corrosion causing a bridge between circuits.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Mid Mount Valve Module to the loader electro valve block. Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Disconnect the harness at the solenoid. Inspect the pins for water ingress, dirt, or corrosion that could bridge the connection and cause a high current draw.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the affected solenoid coil. A reading of zero or near-zero indicates an internal short, confirming the coil has failed.

  4. If the valve block has multiple identical solenoids, temporarily swap the suspect solenoid coil with a known good one from an adjacent valve. If the fault code changes to match the new location, the coil is definitively at fault.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, lower the loader to the ground to relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

    Ensure the machine is safe to work on by relieving pressure and removing power.

  2. Locate the mid-mount electro valve block.

    Typically mounted under the right side of the cab or near the loader subframe.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the failed solenoid.

    Remove the connection to isolate the faulty component.

  4. Remove the retaining nut or clip at the end of the valve stem that holds the solenoid coil in place.

    Free the coil from the valve cartridge.

  5. Slide the faulty solenoid coil off the valve cartridge.

    You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system to replace the coil.

  6. Slide the new replacement solenoid coil onto the cartridge and secure it with the retaining nut/clip.

    Install the new component securely.

  7. Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

    Restore power and communication to the solenoid.

  8. Start the tractor, clear the DTCs via the dash or diagnostic tool, and operate the loader joystick to verify the high amp draw code does not return.

    Test the system to ensure the repair was successful.
