Massey Ferguson M13 – Mid Mount Valve Module: Loader Mid Mount Electro Valve Supply Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The tractor's control system is attempting to send an electrical signal to the supply solenoid on the mid-mount hydraulic valve block (which controls the front loader), but the electrical circuit is incomplete. An "open circuit" is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected or heavily corroded electrical plug, or a burnt-out internal coil within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the mid-mount electro-hydraulic valve block (usually mounted on the right-hand side of the chassis near the loader subframe). Inspect the wiring harness leading to the supply solenoid for chafing, rodent damage, or severed wires.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the electrical plug at the supply solenoid. Check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded pins. Ensure the connector is fully seated and the locking tab is intact.

  3. Solenoid Coil Test: Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance (Ohms) across the pins of the supply solenoid coil. An "OL" (Open Loop) or infinite resistance reading confirms the internal coil is broken and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: If the solenoid tests good, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Mid Mount Valve Module to isolate a broken wire in the loom.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the loader circuit by moving the loader joystick through all positions.

  3. Locate the Solenoid

    Access the mid-mount valve block and identify the specific supply solenoid that is logging the fault.

  4. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

  5. Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, repair the harness using appropriate weatherproof (heat-shrink) splices.

  6. Solenoid Replacement (If Applicable)

    If the coil tested open, remove the retaining nut holding the coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: If replacing the entire cartridge valve, unscrew the cartridge from the valve block, being prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid).

  7. Install New Part

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the stem and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specification.

  8. Reassemble

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  9. Test and Clear

    Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and test the loader functions. Clear the M13 fault code using the dash menu or a compatible diagnostic tool.
