Massey Ferguson M20 – Hydraulic Control Module / Mid Mount Valve Module: Issue With Spool Position Sensor Value

Issue description

The sensor responsible for monitoring the physical position of a hydraulic spool valve is sending an incorrect, out-of-range, or missing signal to the tractor's control system.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the spool position sensor for corrosion, backed-out pins, or open circuits

  2. Check for mechanical binding to ensure the spool valve is not physically sticking due to debris or internal wear

  3. Verify hydraulic oil is at the correct level and hydraulic filters are not blocked

  4. Use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic interface to read live data from the spool position sensor and verify smooth voltage/value changes when the joystick is moved

Repair steps

  1. Relieve Pressure

    Turn off the tractor and cycle the hydraulic joysticks/levers to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system before servicing the mid-mount valve.

  2. Disconnect Wiring

    Locate the mid-mount valve module and disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty spool position sensor.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Unbolt or unthread the spool position sensor from the hydraulic control valve body.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Clean the mating surface to ensure no dirt enters the hydraulic system, then install the new spool position sensor.

  5. Calibrate the Valves

    After replacing the sensor, you must perform a valve calibration using a diagnostic tool.
