P38

Massey Ferguson P38 – Transmission Controller (Dyna-VT / Autotronic controller): P38 X339 - Pneumatic trailer braking solenoid Short circuit to earth (-) valve.

Issue description

The controller has detected a short circuit to ground (earth) in the electrical circuit for the pneumatic trailer braking solenoid valve (designated in the wiring diagrams as component X339).

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the X339 solenoid valve for rub points, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause the wire to short against the tractor's chassis (ground).

  2. Disconnect the X339 solenoid and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damage.

  3. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the X339 solenoid coil. If the resistance is out of specification or shows continuity to the solenoid housing, the coil is internally shorted.

  4. Verify that the pneumatic brake system pressure is above 4 bar (58 psi) and check the condition of the air connection couplers, as low pressure can sometimes trigger secondary brake system warnings.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal (X342/X340 area) to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate Component

Locate the X339 Pneumatic trailer braking solenoid valve on the transmission/brake valve block.

  3. Isolate the Short

With the solenoid disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the harness power supply wire and ground. If continuity exists, trace the harness back to the transmission controller and repair the damaged wire. If no continuity exists, the short is internal to the solenoid valve.

  4. Replace Solenoid (if faulty)

Unbolt the faulty X339 solenoid valve from the pneumatic block. Install the new solenoid valve, ensuring the O-rings/seals are properly seated.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the electrical harness, reconnect the battery, and turn the key on. Clear the error codes via the tractor's diagnostic interface and test the pneumatic trailer brakes to ensure the P38 code does not return.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Pneumatic Trailer Braking Solenoid Valve (OEM Component ID: X339)

Must be compatible with the Dyna-VT transmission ParkLock and pneumatic trailer brake valve block on MF7600/MF8600 series tractors.
