P43

Massey Ferguson P43 – TRANS1: Hydraulic Trailer Brake Solenoid Issue Dyna VT

Issue description

Fault code P43 points to the X39 - Trailer brake safety solenoid valve. The exact electrical fault state is 'Not determined', which usually points to an intermittent signal, an out-of-range resistance value, or a mechanical sticking issue that the controller cannot definitively classify as a hard short or open circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the X39 Trailer brake safety solenoid valve on the transmission hydraulic block and visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafed wires.

  2. Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the coil pins, comparing it to OEM specs to check for a coil breaking down under load.

  3. Turn the key ON and probe the harness side to ensure the TRANS1 module is sending the correct reference voltage and ground to the solenoid.

  4. Remove the solenoid coil and check if the valve spool itself is sticking due to contaminated hydraulic fluid or debris.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and chock the wheels.

  2. Depressurize

Relieve all hydraulic pressure from the tractor and trailer brake circuits by pumping the brake pedals with the engine off.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical connector from the X39 Trailer brake safety solenoid.

  4. Extraction

Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. If the valve cartridge itself is being replaced, unscrew the cartridge from the hydraulic block. Have a catch pan ready for residual hydraulic fluid.

  5. Cleaning

Clean the mating surface on the valve block to ensure no dirt enters the hydraulic system.

  6. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid/valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Thread the new cartridge into the block and torque to OEM specifications. Slide the new solenoid coil over the stem and secure the retaining nut.

  7. Reconnection

Plug the electrical connector back in. Ensure it clicks and locks securely.

  8. Testing

Clear the P43 fault code from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor, actuate the brakes, and check for hydraulic leaks and ensure the code does not return.
