Massey Ferguson P56 – TRANS1: Issue With Park Lock Proximity Switch On The Axle Dyna VT (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission control system is receiving an implausible, missing, or out-of-range signal from the proximity switch located on the axle. This switch is responsible for detecting whether the mechanical park lock is physically engaged or disengaged.

Check the cause
Check for related codes (such as P 72, P 74, P 151, P 152, or P 153) indicating hydraulic pressure or solenoid issues. If present, the lock may be failing to move mechanically rather than a sensor fault.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the proximity switch on the rear axle/transmission housing for chafing, rodent damage, or breaks.
Disconnect the switch and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or loose terminals.
Bench test the proximity switch for continuity and proper switching operation using a multimeter by supplying reference voltage and bringing a metal object near the sensor face.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on level ground and securely chock the wheels to prevent the tractor from rolling when the system is manipulated.
Locate the Switch
Locate the Park Lock Proximity Switch on the axle housing (often located on the top or upper side of the rear transmission/axle housing, sometimes requiring access from under the cab).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor and clean the surrounding area thoroughly to prevent dirt from falling into the axle housing.
Remove the Switch
Loosen the jam nut securing the proximity switch and unthread the sensor from the housing.
Install the New Switch
Thread the new proximity switch into the housing gently until it lightly bottoms out against the internal park lock component, then back it out a specified number of turns (usually 1/2 to 1 full turn) to set the air gap.
Secure
Tighten the jam nut to lock the sensor at the correct depth.
Reconnect and Clear
Reconnect the wiring harness, turn on the ignition, clear the P56 fault code via the diagnostic menu or tool, and test the park lock engagement/disengagement to ensure the code does not return.
