Massey Ferguson P73 – TRANS1: Issue With Park Lock Proximity Switch On The Axle Dyna VT (TRANS1)

Issue description

The electronic control system is detecting an irregular signal, out-of-range voltage, or lack of response from the proximity switch responsible for monitoring whether the mechanical park lock on the axle is engaged or disengaged.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the park lock proximity switch on the axle for chafed wires, broken insulation, or mud/debris buildup.

  2. Disconnect the switch and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion inside the connector plug.

  3. Ensure that no debris, thick mud, or physical damage to the axle housing is obstructing the switch's sensing face or pushing it out of alignment.

  4. Using a multimeter, verify that the switch is receiving the correct reference voltage (5V or 12V) and has a solid ground. Test the signal wire back to the TRANS1 module for open circuits or short-to-ground.

  5. Monitor the live data for the Park Lock Proximity Switch using a diagnostic tool (like AGCO EDT). Manually engage and disengage the park lock to see if the state changes.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Tractor

Park the machine on a flat, level surface. Turn off the engine, remove the key, and heavily chock the wheels.

  2. Locate the Switch

Locate the park lock proximity switch on the transmission/rear axle housing.

  3. Disconnect

Unplug the electrical connector from the proximity switch.

  4. Clean the Area

Thoroughly clean the area around the switch base with brake cleaner or a wire brush to prevent dirt from falling into the axle housing when the switch is removed.

  5. Remove the Switch

Unscrew the proximity switch from the housing.

  6. Install the New Switch

Thread the new proximity switch into the housing. If the switch uses a locknut for depth adjustment, set the air gap exactly to the OEM specification found in your service manual. If it is a fixed-depth switch, simply torque it to spec.

  7. Reconnect and Clear

Plug the electrical connector back in. Turn on the ignition and use your diagnostic tool to clear the P73 fault code.

  8. Test

Start the tractor and cycle the park lock several times to ensure the code does not return and the dashboard indicates the park lock status correctly.
