Massey Ferguson R11 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Raise Or Lower Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The control module has detected a break in the electrical circuit (infinite resistance) to the solenoid responsible for raising or lowering the rear 3-point hitch. Because the circuit is open, the solenoid cannot be energized, and the rear linkage will likely be disabled or unresponsive.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear hydraulic valve block for obvious rub points, breaks, or rodent damage.

  2. Disconnect the raise/lower solenoid connector and check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins on the solenoid coil itself. If the reading is 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite ohms, the internal coil has failed and the solenoid must be replaced.

  4. If the solenoid coil tests within normal resistance specs, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the HITCH module to locate the broken wire.

  5. Verify that the ground circuit for the hitch solenoids is clean and tight.

Repair steps

  1. Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key.

  2. Lower the rear linkage fully to the ground to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  3. Locate the rear linkage control valve block, typically mounted on the rear transmission/hydraulic cover.

  4. Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty raise/lower solenoid.

  5. Depending on the specific valve block design, either remove the retaining nut at the end of the valve stem to slide the electromagnetic coil off, or use a wrench to unthread the entire electrovalve cartridge from the block.

  6. Install the new solenoid/electrovalve and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  8. Turn the ignition on, clear the R11 fault code via the dash/diagnostic tool, and test the raise/lower functions of the rear hitch.
