Massey Ferguson R13 – HITCH: Rear Linkage Lower Solenoid Short Circuit / High Amps (HITCH)

The controller has detected an electrical short circuit or an abnormally high amperage draw on the circuit responsible for actuating the solenoid that lowers the rear 3-point hitch, which typically disables the hitch for safety.

   Perform a system reset by cycling the hitch rocker switch off and on again to ensure the hitch isn't simply locked out.

   Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear linkage lowering solenoid (X28) for rub points, melted insulation, or pinched wires shorting to ground or +12V.

   Disconnect the plug at the solenoid and check for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins causing high resistance or shorting.

   Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins using a multimeter (a reading near 0 ohms, or significantly lower than the standard ~4 ohms, indicates an internal short).

   With the solenoid disconnected, turn the key ON and test the harness-side connector to ensure the short is not in the wiring between the Autotronic Linkage Controller (X177) and the valve.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, lower the rear hitch completely (if possible, or support it mechanically so it does not drop unexpectedly), turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery.

   Locate the Valve

   Identify the lowering solenoid (X28) on the rear lift hydraulic control block (usually located between the rear SCV remotes).

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical harness connector from the solenoid.

   Remove the Coil

   Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: Unless the hydraulic cartridge itself is physically stuck or leaking, you usually only need to replace the electrical coil).

   Install the New Part

   Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal is seated properly.

   Test

   Reconnect the battery, start the tractor, and cycle the hitch rocker switch to wake up the system. Test the raise and lower functions to confirm the R13 code has cleared and the hitch operates smoothly.
