Massey Ferguson R24 – HITCH: Issue With Signal From Hitch Maximum Height Dial (HITCH)

The height limit potentiometer is a dial that allows the operator to manually set the maximum height to which the rear three-point hitch can be raised. The fault triggers when the controller detects an incorrect signal from this dial, typically because the voltage is either too high or too low (indicating an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power).

   Inspect the physical condition of the Hitch Maximum Height Dial on the PTO/linkage console or armrest to ensure it rotates smoothly without binding.

   Access the underside of the console and inspect the wiring harness connecting the potentiometer to the linkage controller for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires.

   Using a multimeter, back-probe the potentiometer connector to verify it is receiving the correct reference voltage and ground.

   Sweep the dial through its full range of motion while monitoring the signal wire; voltage should change smoothly. If it drops out, spikes, or remains static, the potentiometer has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

   Access the Console

   Carefully remove the trim panels or retaining screws to access the underside of the PTO/linkage console or armrest where the dial is mounted.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty height limit potentiometer.

   Remove Component

   Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the dial assembly in place and pull the potentiometer out of the console.

   Install New Part

   Insert the replacement potentiometer, secure it with the retaining hardware, and reattach the control knob.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the new sensor.

   Reassemble and Test

   Reinstall the console trim panels. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the stored R24 fault code.

   Calibration

   Test the rear hitch operation. Depending on the tractor model, a routine linkage calibration via the tractor's diagnostic screen may be required to teach the controller the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum values.
