Massey Ferguson R42 – HITCH: Issue With Signal From Rear Hitch Right Draft Pin (HITCH)

Issue description

The electronic draft control (EDC) system is receiving an out-of-range, saturated, or incorrect electrical signal from the load-sensing pin located on the right lower link arm of the three-point hitch, usually pointing to a failed internal strain gauge, a short circuit, or a broken wire.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the right draft pin and its wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  2. Disconnect the 3-pin plug at the sensor and check for bent pins, dirt, or water inside the connector.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and ground from the HITCH module.

  4. Check the signal wire for continuity back to the EHR control unit and ensure it is not shorted to ground or power.

  5. Temporarily swap the left and right draft pin connectors (if the harness allows) to see if the fault code changes to the left side. If the code follows the pin, the pin is internally faulty.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Lower the three-point hitch lift arms completely to the ground. Disconnect any attached implement to remove all mechanical tension and load from the lower link arms.

  2. Disconnect Electronics

    Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector from the right draft pin sensor.

  3. Remove Retaining Hardware

    Remove the locking bolt, clamp, or retaining pin that secures the draft pin in the hitch housing bracket.

  4. Extract the Pin

    Withdraw the old draft pin from the lower link arm and bracket. (Note: You may need to support the lower link arm slightly to relieve binding pressure while sliding the pin out).

  5. Clean and Prep

    Clean the bore of the bracket and the link arm eyelet. Ensure there is no heavy rust or debris that could damage the new sensor.

  6. Install New Sensor

    Insert the new load-sensing pin into the housing. Ensure the alignment notch/flat edge is positioned correctly so the strain gauge measures the load in the proper direction.

  7. Secure and Reconnect

    Reinstall the retaining hardware and torque to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the 3-pin electrical plug.

  8. Calibration

    Turn the key on and clear the fault codes. A hitch/EDC calibration procedure via the tractor's instrument panel or diagnostic tool is usually required after replacing a draft sensor to teach the EHR module the new sensor's zero-load baseline.
