Massey Ferguson T104 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Voltage Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting an electrical short to power on the circuit controlling the reverse directional clutch, causing the solenoid to draw excessive current (measured current > 40 mA in relation to specified value).

Check the cause
Identify the reverse clutch solenoid (designated as X557) on the transmission control valve block.
Inspect the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the X557 solenoid for rubbed through insulation, pinched wires, or melted sheathing that could cause a short circuit to a +12V power source.
Disconnect the X557 solenoid and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the solenoid coil to check for an internal short causing the excessive current draw.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent any further electrical damage during the repair.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block where the forward/reverse shuttle solenoids are housed.
Remove the Faulty Solenoid
Unplug the electrical connector from the X557 Reverse Solenoid. Remove the retaining nut/bolts holding the solenoid coil and valve cartridge in place.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission hydraulic fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specs.
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid, ensuring the weatherproof seal clicks into place.
Test and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Clear the T104 fault code from the TRANS1 module. Start the tractor and test the forward/reverse power shuttle operation. Depending on the model, a clutch/transmission calibration via the tractor's dash or diagnostic tool may be required to ensure smooth engagement.
