Massey Ferguson T106 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting an excessive electrical current (amperage) draw from the reverse clutch solenoid valve (Component X557). The measured current is exceeding the maximum allowable threshold, which typically points to a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness from the TRANS1 module to the reverse clutch solenoid (X557) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas shorting to ground or a +12V power source.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the X557 solenoid and inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage that could cause a short between terminals.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the reverse clutch solenoid using a multimeter. A healthy solenoid reads around 10 Ohms; a reading near 0 Ohms indicates an internal short (solenoid cause).

  4. Test the circuit by turning the key ON with the solenoid disconnected. If the T106 code changes to an Open Circuit code (e.g., T110), the solenoid is internally shorted. If the high amp draw code remains, the short is in the wiring harness (wiring cause).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the reverse clutch solenoid (X557).

  3. Remove the Faulty Component

    Disconnect the electrical harness plug. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Carefully slide the coil off. (If replacing the entire valve assembly, unthread the valve cartridge from the block, being prepared to catch a small amount of hydraulic fluid).

  4. Install the New Solenoid

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut. If replacing the cartridge, ensure the O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid before threading it into the block. Torque to OEM specifications.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring it clicks and locks securely.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and use the diagnostic interface to clear the TRANS1 fault codes. Engage the reverse gear to verify the transmission shifts smoothly and the T106 code does not return.
