Massey Ferguson T109 – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the forward clutch solenoid has been broken or disconnected, preventing the transmission controller from engaging the forward drive clutch.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block for severed wires, severe chafing, or unplugged connectors.

  2. Disconnect the forward clutch solenoid plug and check for pushed-back pins, heavy corrosion, or water ingress.

  3. Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the pins of the forward clutch solenoid. An infinite (OL) reading indicates the internal coil has failed open.

  4. Check for harness continuity between the solenoid connector and the corresponding pin on the TRANS1 module to rule out a broken wire in the loom.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the Dyna-4/Dyna-6 transmission housing. Identify the specific solenoid for the forward clutch.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty forward clutch solenoid.

  4. Removal

    Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid in place and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body.

  5. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean hydraulic/transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness plug.

  7. Testing

    Reconnect the battery, clear the T109 fault code using a diagnostic tool, start the tractor, and test forward engagement to ensure the repair is successful.
