Massey Ferguson T111 – TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Amps
Issue description
The transmission controller is detecting an abnormally low electrical current (less than 13 milliamps) on the circuit that operates the forward clutch solenoid. This condition typically indicates an open circuit, a broken wire, a disconnected plug, severe corrosion causing high resistance, or a completely failed (open) solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Forward Clutch Solenoid (TR23, TR25, or X556) for broken wires, chafing, or unplugged connectors
Disconnect the plug at the forward clutch solenoid and check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary
Measure the resistance across the two pins of the forward clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter. Compare to the reverse clutch solenoid; infinite resistance (OL) indicates a broken internal coil
If the solenoid tests good, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller pins to rule out a broken wire in the loom
Repair steps
Park and secure tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and engage the parking brake.
Clean valve block area
Clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnect electrical connector
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty forward clutch solenoid.
Remove retaining nut
Remove the retaining nut or screw at the end of the solenoid stem.
Remove old solenoid coil
Slide the old solenoid coil off the valve cartridge. (Note: On many models, you can replace just the electrical coil without removing the hydraulic valve cartridge, which prevents fluid loss).
Install new solenoid coil
Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining nut.
Reconnect electrical connector
Reconnect the electrical connector.
Clear fault code
Turn the ignition on and clear the T111 fault code from the Autotronic controller using the tractor's diagnostic menu or a diagnostic tool.
Perform calibration
Perform a clutch pedal/shuttle calibration after replacing transmission solenoids to ensure smooth engagement and prevent harsh shifting.
Test drive tractor
Test drive the tractor to confirm the forward gear engages properly and the code does not return.
