Massey Ferguson T113 – TRANS1: Issue With Speed Sensor Values

Issue description

The transmission controller detects that the intermediate speed sensor (X483) is reporting no value (0 km/h or 0 mph), but the actual forward travel speed (calculated via the theoretical forward speed sensor or engine speed sensor) is greater than 0 km/h.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the intermediate speed sensor (X483) on the transmission housing. Check the wiring harness and connector for breaks, corrosion, or a loose plug.

  2. Perform a resistance test by unplugging the sensor and testing its internal resistance with a multimeter. A healthy sensor reads around 540 Ohms (+/-). If it reads open (infinite) or shorted, it has failed internally.

  3. Check the wiring harness for continuity between the sensor plug and the TRANS1 controller pins to rule out a broken wire in the loom.

  4. Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic tip. If it is heavily coated in metal shavings, clean it and re-test. Note: Excessive metal shavings can indicate internal transmission wear.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Safely park the tractor on level ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Clean transmission housing

Clean the exterior of the transmission housing around the intermediate speed sensor to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission.

  3. Disconnect wiring harness

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

  4. Remove faulty sensor

Unscrew and remove the faulty speed sensor from the transmission housing.

  5. Lubricate new sensor O-ring

Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with a small amount of clean transmission fluid.

  6. Install new sensor

Thread the new sensor into the housing and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  7. Reconnect wiring harness

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks securely into place.

  8. Clear fault code and test drive

Turn on the tractor ignition, clear the T113 fault code using a diagnostic tool or the onboard display, and test drive the tractor to verify the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
