Massey Ferguson T118 – TRANS2: There Is A Speed Reading from The PTO Speed Sensor That Does Not Match The Speed Selected Switch Dyna 6 (TRANS2)

When the PTO is activated, the tractor's computer expects the PTO speed sensor reading to match the engine speed (adjusted for the selected PTO gear ratio). If the sensor reports a speed that is lower than expected, missing, or erratic, the controller logs this code. This mismatch is primarily used by the system to detect PTO clutch slip, but it is frequently caused by a failing sensor or damaged wiring.

   Use Wintest diagnostic software to monitor live PTO speed versus engine speed while engaged to determine if the issue is a sensor fault or actual mechanical clutch slip

   Test the inductive sensor using a multimeter to check its resistance value while the tractor is stationary

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the PTO speed sensor for vibration damage, moisture, or rub points that could interrupt the signal

   Perform a mechanical and hydraulic check to ensure the PTO clutch pack is not slipping due to worn discs or low hydraulic pressure

   Locate the Sensor

   The PTO speed sensor is located at the rear lower part of the axle housing, reading off the driven pinions on the PTO shaft.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground.

   Remove the Sensor

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor pigtail. Remove the retaining nut/screw holding the sensor in the axle housing.

   Extract and Clean

   Pull the sensor out. Clean the mounting port on the axle housing, ensuring no dirt falls into the transmission/axle fluid.

   Install the New Sensor

   Lubricate the new O-ring and insert the new PTO speed sensor into the housing. Secure it with the retaining nut/snap ring.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Use Wintest or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the T118 fault code, then test-run the PTO to verify the speed reading matches the selected switch.
