Massey Ferguson T133 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5 Transmission Controller): Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault on the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53), typically an open circuit or a short circuit to +12V or 0V (ground).

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission control valve block for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

   Use a multimeter to check the wiring between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) for continuity, open circuits, or short circuits to ground (0V) or power (+12V).

   Verify that the valve is receiving the correct power supply when Range 2 is commanded.

   Measure the resistance of the Range 2 solenoid coil (should be around 10 Ohms). If it reads infinite/open or zero/shorted, the solenoid is internally faulty.

   Ensure there is no inconsistency between the physical Range 2 switch in the cab and the Range 2 solenoid valve state.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the gearbox. Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53). It is typically grouped with the Range 1 (L52), Range 3 (L54), and Range 4 (L55) valves.

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the L53 solenoid.

   Removal

   Remove the retaining screws and the flange securing the solenoid valve to the transmission housing. Pull the solenoid valve straight out. Have a drip pan ready to catch any residual transmission fluid.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new valve into the port, ensuring it seats fully.

   Secure

   Reinstall the flange and tighten the retaining screws to the OEM torque specification.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness connector back into the new solenoid.

   Testing

   Clear the T133 fault code using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor, check for leaks, and test drive to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly into Range 2 without throwing the code.
