Check the cause

  1. Check the Wiring Harness: Inspect the wiring between the Autotronic 5 controller and the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54/X486) for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation that could cause an open circuit or a short to +12V/0V.

  2. Check the Power Supply: Verify that the valve is receiving the correct voltage from the controller.

  3. Inspect Connectors: Check the electrical connector at the solenoid for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture ingress.

  4. Check Switch Consistency: Ensure there is no inconsistency between the Range 3 position switch (L58/X490) and the Range 3 solenoid valve.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission valve block on the side of the gearbox. Identify the Range 3 solenoid valve (labeled as L54 or X486 in the OEM schematic).

  2. Test the Solenoid Coil

    Disconnect the harness from the solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the coil. If the coil reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the solenoid has failed internally.

  3. Repair Wiring (if applicable)

    If the solenoid tests within specification, trace the wiring back to the Autotronic 5 module. Repair any damaged wires or replace the harness section if a short/open circuit is found.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid is faulty, clean the area around the valve block to prevent contamination. Unbolt the solenoid flange/retaining screws, remove the faulty Range 3 solenoid valve, and install the replacement.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness, clear the T134 fault code via the diagnostic interface or instrument panel, and test drive the tractor, ensuring it shifts smoothly into Range 3.
