Massey Ferguson T135 – Autotronic 5: Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)
Issue description
The transmission controller detects an electrical fault on the circuit for the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55 or X487), indicating an open circuit or a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V (ground).

Check the cause
Locate the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55/X487) on the transmission valve block and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Disconnect the harness at the solenoid and at the Autotronic 5 module, then test the wiring for continuity.
Test the solenoid wiring for a short to ground (0V) or a short to power (+12V).
Measure the resistance across the pins of the Range 4 solenoid valve itself. A healthy OEM transmission solenoid typically reads around 10 Ohms. If the coil is open (infinite resistance) or shorted, replace the valve.
Repair steps
Depressurize
Ensure the tractor is turned off, parked on a level surface, and hydraulic pressure is relieved.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block. The Range 4 solenoid (L55) is grouped with the Range 1 (L52), Range 2 (L53), and Range 3 (L54) solenoids.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the Range 4 solenoid.
Remove the Solenoid
Remove the retaining screws/flange holding the L55 solenoid valve in place. Pull the valve assembly out of the transmission housing.
Install the New Valve
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and torque the retaining screws to OEM specifications.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the wiring harness. Use the Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software (or equivalent dealer tool) to clear the T135 fault code.
Test
Start the tractor and shift through all transmission ranges to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
