T136

Massey Ferguson T136 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Autotronic 5: Transmission Internal Software Issue (TRANS) / Autotronic 5 Faulty internal component

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the transmission is slipping (input speed vs. output speed mismatch of over 10% for more than 700 milliseconds) or the controller itself has suffered an internal hardware/software failure preventing it from calculating these values correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission fluid level and ensure the oil is not heavily polluted, which can cause mechanical slippage

  2. Inspect hydraulic filters for blockages, as a blocked high-pressure transmission oil filter can cause pressure drops and clutch pack slippage

  3. Verify power supply by checking battery voltage and the permanent 12V supply to the Autotronic 5 controller (voltage drops below 7V can cause internal errors)

  4. Check for accompanying fault codes like T130 (Low Supply Voltage) or T137/T138 (Braking/Pressure issues) which indicate external sensor or pressure failures

Repair steps

  1. Attempt Calibration

First, attempt to re-flash the transmission software and perform a full transmission calibration using the Massey Ferguson EDT (Electronic Diagnostic Tool). If the software issue is a soft error, this may clear it.

  2. Disconnect Power

If the code returns immediately, disconnect the tractor's battery.

  3. Locate the Module

Locate the Autotronic 5 controller (typically located under the right-hand cab console or under the cab floor, depending on the series).

  4. Remove the Module

Disconnect the multi-pin wiring harnesses from the Autotronic 5 unit. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the faulty controller.

  5. Install the New Module

Mount the replacement Autotronic 5 unit and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  6. Program the Module

Reconnect the battery. You must use the Massey Ferguson EDT dealer software to input the tractor's VIN, configure the parameters for your specific transmission (e.g., Dyna-4 vs. Dyna-6), and perform a complete PowerShuttle and clutch pedal calibration before the tractor will move.
