Massey Ferguson T144 – TRANS: Engine Speed Dropped Too Much During PTO Engagement. Anti Stall Function Dyna 4 (TRANS)

This code triggers when the tractor's electronic control system detects that engaging the Power Take-Off (PTO) is causing the engine RPM to drop to a level where the engine might stall. To protect the engine, the 'Anti Stall Function' intervenes and prevents the PTO clutch from fully engaging or turning.

   Disconnect the implement attached to the PTO to check for a jammed or excessively heavy load

   Verify the engine RPM is high enough to handle the parasitic draw of the implement during clutch modulation (do not engage at idle)

   Inspect the PTO speed sensor on the rear PTO housing for water ingress or physical damage (often caused by pressure washing)

   Check the wiring harness and connections leading to the PTO speed sensor, engine speed sensor, and PTO clutch solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or looseness

   Test Without Load

   Unhook the PTO shaft from the tractor and attempt to engage the PTO. If the PTO engages normally and the code does not return, the issue is with the implement or operator error (engaging at too low of an RPM).

   Inspect and Replace the PTO Speed Sensor

   If the PTO still fails to engage without a load and throws the T144 code, the PTO speed sensor is likely failing to read the shaft speed correctly. Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear housing, disconnect the electrical harness, unthread the sensor from the housing and replace it with a new OEM sensor.

   Check the PTO Selector Switches

   If the sensor is fine, check the PTO engagement switch and creep selector switches on the rear housing, as water damage can short these out as well.

   Calibrate the PTO

   After replacing the sensor, use the tractor's diagnostic terminal or dashboard sequence to recalibrate the PTO clutch engagement modulation to ensure smooth operation.
