T145

Massey Ferguson T145 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS1): The PTO Is Turned On But The PTO Is Not Turning

Issue description

This code triggers when the tractor's electronic system detects that the Power Take-Off (PTO) switch has been activated, but the PTO output shaft fails to rotate, or the engagement caused the engine RPM to drop excessively, triggering the anti-stall safety function.

Applies to these machines

  • 5612
  • 7622
  • Interim Tier 4 (2012-2015)

  • 7624
  • 6400
  • 6600
  • 6700
  • 7700

Check the cause

  1. Check engine speed to ensure it is sufficient before engaging the PTO (anti-stall function may be halting the PTO)

  2. Verify the PTO output shaft speed sensor (X16) and the PTO clutch speed sensor (X15) for discrepancies or lack of signal

  3. Test the Rear PTO clutch solenoid valve (X7) for an open circuit, short circuit to +12V, or short circuit to ground

  4. Inspect for mechanical faults such as a seized PTO output shaft, a faulty PTO speed selection lever, or a burnt-out PTO clutch pack

Repair steps

  1. Clear the Code & Retest

Clear the transmission codes. Increase engine RPM to a stable operating range and attempt to engage the PTO. If it engages without stalling, the issue was likely operator error (engaging at too low of an RPM).

  2. Inspect Wiring Harness

Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the PTO clutch solenoid and the PTO speed sensors at the rear of the transmission housing. Look for chafed wires or corroded connectors.

  3. Test/Replace the Solenoid

Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the PTO clutch solenoid coil. If it is out of specification, open, or shorted, replace the solenoid coil/valve assembly.

  4. Test/Replace the Speed Sensor

If the solenoid is functioning and receiving voltage but the PTO still won't register as turning, remove and inspect the PTO speed sensor. Clean any metallic debris from the magnetic tip. If it fails to output a signal when tested, replace the sensor.

  5. Mechanical Repair

If all electrical components (sensors, solenoids, and wiring) are verified good, the transmission/PTO housing must be opened to inspect the mechanical PTO clutch pack and driveline for physical failure or seizing.
